A New Blog

I still have a few hummingbirds coming around now and then but don't see them nearly as often, the deer had a feast on most of the flowers the hummers like.

I am starting a new blog you can find here called Backyard Wonders. I have decided that instead of burying all the posts about the hummingbirds in order to post pictures of other birds and critters that visit my yard, it would be best to just start a new blog, thus keeping the information on hummingbirds more accessible.

On another note... These little hummingbirds, are being featured in the October issue of Birder's World Magazine, in the From Your Backyard section.

Hi Hummingbird :) Just want to say how much my family has enjoyed following your blog...we discovered it while we had our own hummer's nest earlier this summer. Our babies fledged the nest about the same time as yours. Our mama hummer built her nest on our front porch, in our honey-suckle bush. We left the nest alone after our babies were gone, and enjoyed their company as they hung around in the trees in our back yard.

Well, a couple of weeks ago we noticed a change in their old nest...one of the hummer's has built a second nest, directly on top of the first one!! She has been sitting on it very regularly, and just yesterday we noticed that we have some new babies! Think they must have just hatched in the last day or two. She was feeding them this morning, as we could see how tiny they are now.

It was amazing to be able to watch the first set of babies. I have two boys, age 8 and 12...what an incredible experience for them. And now we are blessed to have the experience for a second time!

Just wanted to share this with you. And tell you how much we enjoyed all your photos...you got some awesome shots! We took a lot of pics too, but none as good as yours...because our nest is up high, near the roof of our porch.

We are located in central California, by the way.

Just wanted to share our story with you...

Thank you Debbie, How exciting to have a second nest! I have read that hummingbirds will build a new nest right on top of an old one. The hummers here are getting ready to migrate, along with some of the other birds that only show up for spring and summer. I will miss them, but will look forward to seeing them return next spring. I plan to deer proof a small area so the hummers can have their favorite flowers to sip on for a bit longer next year.

What marvelous photos and an interesting storyline to accompany them! WHY did you stop? What a shame that there hasn't been a new post in two years. This blog had/has SO much potential!
